Chattermill MCP in Gemini Enterprise

Connect Chattermill to Gemini Enterprise so your team can ask Gemini about your customer feedback.

Written by Mikhail Dubov

You can connect Chattermill to Gemini Enterprise as a custom MCP server. Once it's connected, people in your organisation can ask Gemini about your feedback data, for example "What are the top complaints about delivery this month?", and Gemini answers using your Chattermill themes, metrics and comments. Each person signs in with their own Chattermill account and only sees the projects they already have access to in Chattermill.

Before you start

Gemini Enterprise is a separate Google product. It isn't included in Google Workspace plans (including Business Standard and Business Plus), and the Gemini app at gemini.google.com doesn't support custom MCP servers for work accounts. You can get Gemini Enterprise in two ways:

  • Gemini Enterprise Business edition, a self-serve subscription for teams that use Google Workspace.

  • Gemini Enterprise Standard or Plus edition, bought and managed through the Google Cloud console.

We don't provide instructions for buying or activating Gemini Enterprise. Speak to your Google Workspace or Google Cloud administrator, or to Google. The steps below use the Google Cloud console. If you're on Business edition, an admin adds the server under Connected apps > Add MCP server using the same values.

Connecting Chattermill is a one-off task for an administrator. The person doing it needs:

  • Admin access to your Gemini Enterprise app. In Google Cloud this is the Discovery Engine Admin role (roles/discoveryengine.admin) on the project that hosts Gemini Enterprise. Project Owner also works.

  • Organization Policy Administrator (roles/orgpolicy.policyAdmin) on your Google Cloud organization, if your organization blocks custom MCP servers. Many organizations do by default, see step 2.

  • A Chattermill account, to sign in and test the connection.

After setup, everyone else only needs a Gemini Enterprise licence and a Chattermill account.

Ask Chattermill for a Client ID and Client Secret

Contact your Customer Success Manager or Chattermill support and ask for Gemini Enterprise credentials. We'll send you a Client ID and a Client Secret. Keep the Client Secret private, like a password.

Step 1: Find your Chattermill MCP address

Use the address for the region your Chattermill account is in:

  • If you sign in at app.chattermill.com: https://app.chattermill.com/mcp

  • If you sign in at app-us.chattermill.com: https://app-us.chattermill.com/mcp

Step 2: Allow custom MCP servers in Google Cloud

Google Cloud can block custom MCP connectors with an organization policy. If it's enforced, creating the data store in step 4 fails with "Operation denied by org policy". To allow custom MCP servers for your Gemini Enterprise project only:

  1. In the Google Cloud console, select the project that hosts Gemini Enterprise.

  2. Go to IAM & Admin > Organization policies.

  3. Search for "custom MCP" and open discoveryengine.managed.disableCustomMcpServerConnector.

  4. Click Manage policy, choose Override parent's policy, add a rule with Enforcement set to Off, and save.

The change can take a few minutes to apply.

Step 3: Enter the Chattermill connection details

  1. In the Google Cloud console, open Gemini Enterprise and select your app.

  2. Click Connected data stores, then New data store.

  3. Search for "Custom MCP Server" and click Add MCP server.

  4. Under Authentication settings, choose OAuth 2.0 and fill in the fields below.

  • MCP Server URL: your address from step 1

  • Authorization URL: https://auth.chattermill.com/authorize

  • Authorization URL Parameters: &audience= followed by your MCP Server URL, for example &audience=https://app.chattermill.com/mcp

  • Token URL: https://auth.chattermill.com/oauth/token

  • Client ID and Client Secret: the values Chattermill sent you

  • Scopes: openid profile email offline_access mcp:read

  • Enable PKCE Support: ticked

  • Use HTTP Basic Authentication: ticked (the default)

Step 4: Sign in and create the data store

  1. Click Verify Auth and sign in with your Chattermill account in the pop-up. If your browser blocks the pop-up, allow pop-ups for console.cloud.google.com and try again.

  2. Click Continue, give the data store a name such as "Chattermill", and click Create.

If you see "You must configure your access control settings before you continue", your project doesn't have an identity provider yet. Go to Gemini Enterprise > Settings > Authentication, choose Google Identity for your location (or 3rd Party Identity if your organization uses Workforce Identity Federation), save, then go back and click Reload.

Step 5: Turn on the Chattermill tools

Gemini Enterprise adds the Chattermill tools switched off.

  1. Open the Chattermill data store and go to the Actions tab.

  2. Click Reload custom actions. The Chattermill tools appear, such as Get Feedback, Get Metrics and List Themes.

  3. Select all of them and click Enable actions.

Step 6: Try it

Open your Gemini Enterprise app and ask a question about your feedback, for example "Using Chattermill, what were the most common issues in the last 30 days?". The first time each person uses Chattermill, Gemini asks them to sign in with their Chattermill account.

Troubleshooting

  • "Operation denied by org policy" when creating the data store. The policy in step 2 is still enforced, or the change hasn't applied yet. Wait a few minutes and try again.

  • "Failed to obtain refresh token" after signing in. The Client Secret is missing or wrong. Re-enter it and click Verify Auth again.

  • "401 Unauthorized" when reloading actions. Check that the Authorization URL and Token URL use auth.chattermill.com, and that the audience parameter matches your MCP Server URL exactly.

  • Reload custom actions fails and asks you to re-authorize. Click Re-authenticate on the data store page, sign in again, then reload.
